In the new rule, the medical cover of surrogate mothers has been increased from 18 to 36 months. The limit of permission for surrogacy after the marriage has also been reduced from 5 years. Indian married couples, married couples of Indian origin living abroad and single Indian women will be able to avail surrogacy under certain conditions. However, in the case of single women, they must be widowed or divorced.
At the same time, Union Minister Smriti Irani also stressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted liberal ideas in women's reproductive rights.
