Vijay Mallya took over the business at the ripe young age of 27 after death of his father in 1983. He built it into a multi billion dollar conglomorate with turnover of over USD 4 billion and market value of USD 12 billion.
He had done his schooling in La Martinere Calcutta where nafisa ali was also a student and graduated from St Xaviers College in the same city. He grew up in Calcutta with his mom as his dad was always travelling. He has a Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration (Honoris Causa) from Southern California University, Irvine, USA
In 1986, he married Samira Tyabjee whom he met on board an Air India flight where she was an air hostess. Siddharth Mallya was born to them in 1987. His second marriage was to a Coorgi Rekha and they had two daughters.

His UB group owned brands like Kissan, Berger Paints, Aventis Pharma, Best & Crompton and Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilisers all of which were sold. Most of the M&A deals were done when he was in his 30s and was dealing with long established businesses and business leaders.
Mallya was targeted by former finance minister VP Singh during his raid raj against top industrialists. He later joined politics as a independent Rajya Sabha MP and for the second term with support from BJP and JD(S). He was a member of several parliamentary committees.
Mallya is extremely religious. Every plane purchased by Kingfisher was first flown to Tirupati.
He's gone to Sabarimala over 20 times now with a group of friends. He walks barefoot the last 10km like an ordinary pilgrim before climbing the 18 steps for a darshan of the deity.
Mallya has gold-plated the roof of the sanctum sanctorum. This offering initially attracted criticism, but the Kerala High Court finally allowed him to donate 32kg of gold and 1,900kg of copper to gold-plate the temple roof. The exercise reportedly cost him Rs 18 crore.
