What are some less known scams in India?
I met an Israeli guy in Guwahati who had been a victim to it. This scam runs in Connaught Place, New Delhi.
It turns out that scammers are getting creative at their job.
And why not? More than 8 million people visit India every year. Even if one-fourth of that are white-skinned westerners, that’s a whopping 2 million visitors a year.
And most of these visitors land in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Chennai or Bangalore. So there is a huge chance that foreigners will come to visit Connaught Place, an area so bloody expensive that business rent here is among the top in the world.

Anyways, this scam works as a 2 man operation, but one person is at the forefront and the other manages the backend.
The main guy walks around the circular market and near Central Park with poo in his hands. No one knows what type of poo is it - human, dog, cat, cow - and it could be any one of them.
He tries to spot white skin among a sea of brown skin. Once he does, he slowly creeps nearer, says hello and tries to talk some shit.
Once close enough, he’ll drop the poo on the tourist’s shoe.
How can he land the poo exactly on the shoe? Practice, practice, and more practice.
After the deed is done, the scammer would say to the victim: “Sir, my God, what an outrage this is. You have poop on your shoe. Literally, that is known as tatti in Hindi. It’s bad stuff. Come with me, I can help you clean it fast.”

The tourist being naive about elaborate scams has only five options now:
1) clean it himself (but he doesn’t have napkins) 2) throw away the shoe which is ridiculous 3) take out the shoe and throw it back at the scammer yelling “there is poo here? so eat it, fucker” but he doesn’t have guts to do that in a foreign country 4) wash it off at a public toilet (for example McDonald’s) or 5) pay the scammer and get it over with.
In my opinion, the 3) option is the best but this scam works because most of the westerners go for the 5) option.
The scammer will then happily take the tourist to another spot and ask his cobbler friend to clean the poo on the shoe. $20 will be asked for this service but the tourist will be allowed to bargain and a deal will be made at $10, making the tourist think he has saved $10.
The cobbler will clean the shoe thoroughly and even remove any dirty smell.
Rinse repeat. Rinse repeat.
These kinds of idiots have ruined India’s reputation for being an awesome travel destination.
Please upvote and share to spread the word around. Save tourists from this pathetic scam.
